The world we live in is morally bankrupt. The recent global economic crisis has exposed not just the flaws in various economic models but also the moral corrosion in society itself. What we have today is a society in which materialism overwhelms moral commitment. A global community where almost everything is “for a sale”, from human worth to international justice. No doubt, there has been an enormous erosion of public trust- in government, as well as in various social, financial, and religious institutions. Amidst all these unholy mess, man must rise and fully embrace his inherent duty to glorify and serve God. After all, it is not just the highest good but the very reason humanity was created. The true God whom man must worship is not just the author of morality but also the embodiment of all that are good and righteous.

Walking is a metaphor for pilgrimage. As we traverse this world, God wants us to abide with Him every day, that is, surrender our own personal desires to live by God’s purpose, doing what He wants us to do at every moment. “Walk humbly with your God” captures in one line the essence of true faith and devotion to God. It describes a lifestyle that is not proud, not self-willed, and not arrogant. Humility, then, which is, certainly, an evasive trait, is important before God. Man must have it in his heart so that it will come out spontaneously in every act that he performs. No man must be fully preoccupied with himself, so much so that in his everyday living busyness, he actually forgets to listen to what God is saying through His words.

Man must follow God’s will prudently- the exact opposite of many who live carelessly, presumptuously doing things their own way instead of being attentive to His commands and instructions. To walk humbly with God, then, is as much a challenge as it is a requirement from the Lord. You don’t live proudly and walk humbly at the same time

Humility may be an elusive commodity in this proud and wicked generation, but we must also make every effort to make humility the habit patterns of our lives. Petty selfishness and too much self-consciousness should be squeezed out and replaced with God-consciousness.
