If someone does something good for you, like giving you a gift, good nature demands that you say, “Thanks”. The gift-giver might be upset if the recipient just takes it without even saying a word of thanks. Moreover, if the receiver of that gift carelessly discards it, he could be cited for ingratitude. In today’s fast-paced world, so many people seem not to have time for thankfulness- it is rather filled with chronic grumblers and complainers. They gripe about countless things in life- weather, traffic, food, and problems at work, family difficulties, and many others. They count their worries, not their blessings.

We ostensibly live at a time when simple courtesy and politeness are becoming a rarity. However, as Christians, we ought to be different. Why? It is because it is an inherent duty and responsibility of all men- who were created by God to acknowledge Him. Man, it can be argued, is not a solitary creature owing nothing to anyone- he owes his very existence to God, his Maker. Giving thanks to Him is not a sign of weakness but rather a sign of meekness towards the Creator. The Lord God, it must be understood, had made and formed man from the womb of his mother. He is the real reason for every person’s existence.

Man often boasts about his accomplishments but forgets to realize that everything he has is really a gift from God. History is replete with examples of learned and capable men who did not fully succeed. Ultimately, man must come to the conclusion and deduce that all his talents, his health, his sanity, his prowess and even his resources to work with come from God. All riches and honor come from God; His hand controls power and might, and it is at His discretion that men are made great and given strength. Man can make all the plans he wants and busily carry them out, but he must realize that it is simply because of God that he lives every moment and is able to do things he does.

Prayer is an essential part of conveying appreciation for the graces of the Heavenly Father. He awaits our expression of a sincere and simple prayer from the heart for all the blessings and gifts He provides. By giving thanksgiving offerings also, we solidify our relationship with God and manifest our love and trust in Him.
