Have you ever felt that you do believe that this universe has a creator that we can all be aware of, but you don't believe in the systematized religions that claim to know the creator's true nature? I, for one, know a lot of people who think like this. They would like to describe themselves to be "spiritual" rather than "religious" and claim that they have a personal relationship with their creator that only they could ever understand. There's actually a formal term for this type of belief, including those beliefs that are very close to it, and it is called deism.
Deism basically calls for reason and observation as the way in order to discover the true nature of the creator. These people typically reject the notion of systematic groups, holy books, the idea of prophecies and miracles, and everything that assumes that the creator interferes with the day-to-day lives of ordinary human beings. Deism became especially prominent during the 17th and 18th centuries, the Age of Enlightenment. One theory that embodies the views of deism is the Clockwork universe theory. According to this theory, God created the universe in the beginning but allowed it to move and expand on its own, taking a step back and just pushing everything to go in motion. The world is deterministic this way as it is only governed by natural laws. Obviously, there has been so much criticism thrown at it because of its deterministic belief. This is understandable given that it was introduced prior to the discovery of quantum theory. But what pushes people to think that there is a creator but there is no truth in organized religion? For one, deists view organized religion as something created only by mankind, interfering with their supposed religion with god. A friend put it succinctly when he said that religion only limits his ability to explore on his own. You can talk about...
