There’s More to Life than Material Things

To be in the league of the rich and famous, the likes of Bill Gates, Oprah, Donald Trump, Warren Buffet, to name a few- people who have gained iconic stature in their respective fields because of their wealth, fame, success and influence- is the desire of many people today. Their life stories are earnestly followed, dissected, gossiped about, and their examples imitated. Their words are taken seriously and their advices in their field of expertise are obeyed to the letter, for they could mean financial and personal success.

Indeed, material comfort and personal success are a sure motivation to many people and those who enjoy them evoke curiosity, for these are the things people usually aspire for and pursue in life. Small wonder why most, if not all, of many people’s time and efforts are directed toward the attainment of these things. Those who have already achieved them employ every means possible to maintain the status quo. And those who haven’t? They continue to work even harder and sweat it out. Moreover, many parents strive to send their children to reputable schools in hope that through good education, their children will achieve what they have failed to accomplish and their dreams to be realized by them.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with setting goals for ourselves, such as pursuing material comfort and personal success in our chosen careers. But all our efforts, time and attention should not just be trained and spent towards attaining these things as if everything in our life depended on them and they became the be-all and end-all of our existence. There is something in life that is far more important than material comfort and personal success. The Psalmist teaches this: “Let your constant love comfort me, as you have promised me, your servant,” (Psalms chapter one hundred nineteen verse seventy six.

For God’s true servants, the comfort of His constant love is what matters most. It far outweighs material comfort and personal success. And this is what all of us must aspire to have and enjoy in life. Life, as we all know, is the most precious of man’s possession. But for the servants of God, His love is far better than life’s comforts and even life itself.
