Shrinking clothes in the dryer is one of those things that we would not want to happen to our clothes. Some clothes are dryer-safe, but if you are not the type of person who regularly checks what your clothes are good for, you will learn the awful way that you should look at the markings first. Contrary to common belief, it is not actually the heat of the dryer that shrinks the clothes. If that is the case, haven't you wondered why your clothes do not shrink when dried under the sun? According to research conducted by Cotton Incorporated, it is actually the tumbling motion of a typical tumbler dryer that evaporates the moisture out of your clothes and consequently shrink it. To prove this, the researchers put clothes that are not dryer-safe and put them in a dryer without the heat source. The clothes still shrunk by about 20% by just tumbling around without the heat source. Why does this happen? This makes sense. Heating something is supposed to expand a substance, not contract it. As mentioned in the linked article above, clothes shrink when put to the dryer because during their creation, the fabric is stretched out very much to make them cheaper. Putting them dryer makes them contract to their original state. If you ever encounter this laundry mishap, do not fret. This can be still repaired and your clothes can be still stretched to their original size. It takes a lot of work (it is a difficult process) but it can be done. This can range from simply washing the clothes and stretching them until they reach the desired size, to more complex processes involving soaking your clothes in water with hair conditioner.
